Ashington v Tynedale Cricket Club 1st Team on Sat 09 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Tynedale Cricket Club Lost 23 Runs
Match report
Tynedale first XI travelled to Ashington on a breezy Saturday afternoon with high hopes of a strong performance. The Tynedale team was strengthened by the return of Michael Parton and Craig Barber. Skipper Richard Darling lost the toss and was asked to field by the home captain.
Professional Barry Stewart opened the bowling for the visiting side and looked immediately threatening, bowling at good pace and getting good swing and movement off the seam. Joe Barber opened the bowling at the other end and found instant success picking up a wicket in his first over with a devastating in-swinging delivery. Ashington batsmen Scott Thornton and former Tynedale player Simon Prudhoe looked to consolidate the innings and move the score along without taking any risks. Prudhoe was especially dominant against the fuller delivery, driving powerfully through cover. He also picked up a six (something he rarely managed in his Tynedale days) from the bowling of Barber. With Tynedale struggling to take a wicket the skipper turned to the experienced Mark Armstrong, Armstrong bowled well until his was unable to continue due to back pains.
The breakthrough wasn’t made until Liam Pringle was brought into the attack, picking up a wicket in his first over. A rain delay then hampered the progress of the visiting team, providing the home side with a chance to regroup. When play commenced the pro got in on the act picking up 2 well deserved wickets from consecutive deliveries and narrowly missing out on a hat-trick. Tight bowling and good fielding restricted the home side to taking risky singles and some agricultural batting. Darling was being particularly accurate, applying immense pressure to the batsmen and picked up 3 wickets because of it. An immense diving catch from wicket-keeper Jamie Crichton summed up the skill of the Tynedale fielders. Ashington closing their innings on 151-9. All of the Tynedale bowlers were economic and threatening to the batsmen. Darling picking up 3-19, Pringle 3-33, Stewart 2-36 and Barber 1-29.
Tynedale’s opening pair Neil Clark and Gary Hunter began their innings in the usual fashion, with Clark looking to be aggressive early on and Hunter looking to anchor the innings. Clark being especially aggressive thriving on anything short or slightly over pitched, scoring 36 in 43 balls before being run out, Hunter and Stewart continued to move the scoring rate along, pushing singles and putting the bad ball away before both being dismissed within 3 overs of each other. With the score on 93-3 Tynedale were marching towards a win, especially with two of their more natural batsmen, Barber and Parton, at the crease. The pair looked to be aggressive but both fell to reckless shots at a crucial stage of the game.
Although Tynedale had a strong batting line-up, nobody was able to settle at the crease. The bowling of Ashington captain Rutherford being a particular highlight, he conceded very few runs thus creating pressure on the batsmen. As wickets fell at regular intervals Tynedale limped to 128 before being bowled out at the start of the 41st over.
Tynedale will be able to take confidence from their bowling capabilities into the next game but their batting will have to improve if they are to have a successful season.
