Tynedale Cricket Club 1st Team v Shotley Bridge on Sat 02 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Tynedale Cricket Club Lost By 2 wickets

Match report After a decisive performance last week Tynedale 1st XI faced a strong Shotley Bridge side. Shotley, along with new recruit former Tynedale professional Stuart Graham, knew they were going to have a battle on their hands after two impressive performance from the home side in the previous fortnight. Former Shotley Bridge player and current England World Twenty20 captain Paul Collingwood came to watch his former team play. With Richard Darling once again winning the toss and electing to bat the day had started brightly for Tynedale.
Neil Clark and Gary Hunter opened the innings by trying to rotate the strike early on and put pressure on the visiting team. This was successful until Graeme Angus got a delivery to nip back and uprooted Clark’s off stump. This brought Barry Stewart to the crease, he immediately found the middle of the bat by putting his second ball away for 4. Hunter and Stewart continued to rotate the strike and put the bad ball away, the pair scored freely until Hunter was caught at slip by Peter Collingwood for a well made 21. Stewart continued to manoeuvre the ball into the gaps but both he and Joe Barber were removed in consecutive overs. New pair Jamie Crichton and Paul Scandle aimed to rebuild the innings, but Scandle finding himself caught by Collingwood. Crichton, scoring his first runs of the season after a tense few balls, looked in fluent form before being dismissed by Graham. This brought the impressive John Alder to the crease. Alder continued his fine form for the season stroking the ball to the boundary on many occasions. Darling and Alder set about building a partnership but still looking to score at every opportunity, with both men finding the boundary on several occasions. A particular highlight in Darlings innings being a flat six over point off Graham that flew in to the gardens next to the ground. Darling and Alder putting on 72 before Alder was stumped with the score on 153-7. Darling bringing up his 50 shortly after and struck his third 6 of the innings before being caught, once again, by Collingwood. Mark Armstrong finished the innings with two powerful strokes off Graham.
Tynedale finished their innings on 172-9, a competitive total that would be difficult to chase under the pressure of tight bowling and the inevitable movement of the new ball.
Shotley Bridge’s innings began in uncertain circumstances for the away team. Stewart and Darling moved the ball off a length and caused havoc with the opening batsmen getting the ball to move both ways. Stewart picking up the wicket of Brown in only his second over, Darling, who was looking increasingly threatening, was forced out of the attack mid way through his third over. Joe Barber replaced him and was immediately effective in dismissing Stuart Graham thanks to brilliant acrobatic fielding at gully from Clark. Collingwood was dismissed soon after through accurate bowling by Stewart. With the score on 32-3 Darling brought Liam Pringle into the attack, in tandem with Stewart runs became difficult to find for the visiting batsmen. After 5 consecutive maidens from the pair, the pro picked up his third wicket of the innings. Alex Thomson replaced the pro and immediately found pace and bounce. With Pringle bowling tightly from one end Thomson was able to attack at the other, but the batsmen were content to block anything on the stumps and wait for the bad ball. Pringle then being replaced after a tight spell by the experienced Armstrong, who immediately found turn. Bridge batsmen Stokoe and Cleaver pushed the score along to 90 before being dismissed in consecutive overs. This brought the dangerous Graeme Angus to the crease. He looked to show his dominance immediately by launching several huge sixes in the early part of his innings. He then continued to play his shots throughout the later part of the innings pushing Shotley ever closer to the total. Late wickets did arrive courtesy of Stewart and Pringle and they brave return to the bowling attack of the injured Darling boosted their chances of victory. Pringle and Darling bowled tightly in the closing overs but they were not able to win the game for Tynedale. Angus being the hero of the innings by scoring a rapid 56 not out.
While Tynedale suffered defeat for the season there were many positives to be from the hard fought encounter. Richard Darling’s powerful performance with the bat and the continuing form of Johnny Alder, tight bowling from Stewart and Pringle and excellent fielding by ever member of the team being particular highlights.
