Morpeth v Tynedale Cricket Club 1st Team on Sat 25 Apr 2009 at 1.30pm
Tynedale Cricket Club Won 73 runs
Match report
After a tense opening game of the season Tynedale 1st XI travelled to Morpeth for their second successive away fixture. With 2 enforced changes to the team, new recruit Michael Parton making his debut and Joe Mills replacing Joe Barber and Alex Thomson. After skipper Richard Darling won his first toss of the season, Tynedale elected to bat.
Opening pair Neil Clark and Gary Hunter began the innings in an aggressive fashion hitting five boundaries in first 5 overs before Hunter was dismissed. Clark continued to rotate the strike until he was caught by a sharp diving catch at gully. This brought the technically impressive Parton to the crease, partnering Barry Stewart. They rotated the strike and punished the bad ball. With both Stewart and Parton driving forcefully through the covers, a solid base for Tynedale’s innings was being built. As Stewart began trying to accelerate the run rate, Parton rotated the strike by pushing the fielders and running hard between the wickets.
After Stewart hauled out off the bowling of Craigs for a well made 48, Jamie Crichton strode to the crease but soon left without troubling the scorers and being replaced by Paul Scandle. Parton and Scandle continued to rotate the strike and put away the bad ball, until Parton was dismissed for a very aesthetically impressive innings of 44. John Alder then continued where the departing batsman had left off by punishing any wayward bowling.
Scandle soon followed Parton back to the pavilion and skipper Darling took his place. With Darling and Alder looking to score off most deliveries Tynedale had high hopes of a large score to defend. The pair continued to rotate the strike as well as put away the bad ball. Darling smashed two massive 6’s before being caught at long off attempting a third. Alder then began to increase the run rate even further in the later stages of the innings amassing 40 off only 49 deliveries. With a score of 203-7 Tynedale were extremely pleased with the way the innings had gone.
The second innings started brightly for Morpeth with Leeson and Reynolds punishing any wayward bowling, moving the score on quickly past 30. They continued to bat confidently until Darling dismissed Leeson via a well judged running catch by Mark Armstrong. Barry Stewart then dismissed Craigs third ball and the score moved on to 40-2. Armstrong was then introduced into the attack and proved to be difficult to get away. Liam Pringle was then brought on to replace Darling, and he was effective immediately. His first over was a wicket maiden. Both off-spinners bowled a tight line and length and began frustrating the batsmen. Drawing false shots and creating chances. Armstrong picked up 3 quick wickets, 2 of which being well caught on the boundary by Michael Parton. Pringle then followed Armstrong with wickets taking 4 in his next 5 overs. With Morpeth struggling to reach 130 all out Tynedale got a deserved win thanks to some good batting from Stewart, Parton and Alder and excellent bowling spells from Armstrong and Pringle. Who finished on 3-43 and 5-30 respectively.
