Match report
Early Season Nail-Biter For Tynedale
Tynedale 1st XI began their 2009 season on a cold afternoon away at Leadgate. Complete with a new professional, Barry Stewart, and the returning Joe Barber, and recently off the back of a pre-season friendly victory over Hexham Leazes. Tynedale have high hopes of a successful season.
Captain Richard Darling began the season by losing the toss and being inserted by the home team captain. Tynedale’s opening batsmen Neil Clark and Gary Hunter strode to the crease intent on starting the season brightly. Neil Clark beginning the season with a 4 off the first ball and regularly finding the boundary early on. Clark and Hunter putting on 49 for the 1st wicket, before Clark was bowled by Richardson’s second ball for a well made 36. This brought the new pro to the crease, he opened his account with a flowing cover drive for 4. Hunter and Stewart putting on 78, playing their shots while trying to increase to run-rate, before Stewart was dismissed for 30. Joe Barber then compiled a quick-fire 27 which included 2 boundaries and a six, with wickets falling around him. Gary Hunter then departed for a battling 54, shortly followed by Crichton and Darling who both came and went without troubling the scorers. After Barber was dismissed, John Alder and Paul Scandle finished the innings putting on 20 in the latter overs making 13 and 10 respectively, with Scandle being bowled by the last ball of the innings.
With a total of 191-7 exceeding expectations on the low pitch, Tynedale were content with the score being more than challenging.
Leadgate’s innings began at a slow pace with scoring being restricted by tight bowling from Barry Stewart and Richard Darling, with Stewart picking up his 1st wicket for his new club in only his 3rd over. With the bowling being accurate and the fielding being electric scoring was difficult early on, with Jackson and Greenwall being content to be strong in defence and not chase after the bowling. This prompted a change in the bowling by skipper Darling, bringing Alex Thompson on. Gathering momentum coming down the hill Thompson bowled at a brisk pace finding movement through the air and off the pitch, he routinely beat the bat until Jackson edged a swinging delivery straight into the safe hands of Crichton. Barry Stewart, switching ends, then removed Greenwall leg before. Liam Pringle then replaced Thompson and was among the wickets straight away picking up 2 wickets in his first 3 overs, then a third later in his spell. Taking the score to 109-6 Richardson and Hockaday consolidated the innings by manoeuvring the field picking up singles. With Darling and Stewart bowling tightly from one end and Pringle bowling steadily from the other the batsmen found boundaries hard to come by. Richardson occasionally hitting out and aiming towards the short boundary, on one occasion launching Darling out of the ground. Barber replaced Pringle to mix things up, bowling two overs. Before Darling made a brave decision to bring Pringle back to bowl the second last over, with only 10 required. With 6 coming from the penultimate over, Darling had a challenge a head of him with the score on 187-7 and Leadgate only requiring 5 to win from the last over. With only 3 coming from the 1st five balls, a tense final ball was imminent with only 2 required. Darling using all his experience to deceive the batsman and only concede a leg bye off the final delivery. This took the score to 191-7 resulting in a tied match. A tight finish highlighted how well both teams had played and both thoroughly deserved not to lose the game.
