Tynedale Cricket Club Won 85 runs

Match report FANTASTIC FOX GOES LARGE

Despite being under strength Tynedale Seconds ran out comfortable winners over Benwell and walbottle last weekend.

The victory was in large due to the form of their skipper Graeme Fox who is relishing the responsibility of leading and this seems to be having a positive effect on all aspects of his game.

Winning the toss the skipper elected to bat first hoping a big score would be on the cards with the sun shining and bat friendly wicket.

Unfortunately top run maker Iain Riccalton fell in the fifth over and this brought Fox to the crease with Whelton. Fox in the past has showed inadequacies against the new ball but such is form he could handle hot coals with ease.

Fox and Whelton set about steadying the ship after the early wicket with boundaries coming regularly off the two opening bowlers. Fox in particular timing the ball exceptionally of his legs.

Benwell were forced into a bowling change and brought on the off spinner Green. Green gives the ball plenty of flight an opportunity Whelton found too good to miss. Unfortunately he holed at deep square leg. As happens so many times in cricket one wicket brings two, in the case it brought three with Archer and Horncastle going within three overs.

Graeme Riccalton joined Fox and their experience showed using their feet to Green milking him for over six an over. At this stage Fox had reached his half century with ease and the only thing that looked to be opposing him from getting his century was Riccalton keeping the strike.

Luckily for Fox Riccalton went to ball that kept low for 33.

Fox carried on driving his team ala Flintoff in the Ashes. Batsmen came and went as Fox edged closer to three figures. It eventually came to the last ball before Fox reached his ton a four over mid on capping a fine batting display and Tynedale posting a respectable 215 – 8.

In reply Benwell were always going to struggle with pacey openers Thompson and Hornacstle. The latter bowled too well moving the ball away of the seam and in the air.

Thompson picked up Vedhara in the 10th over and from this point Benwell’s fate was sealed.

The other opener Green always proves difficult batsmen to remove but the skipper brought himself on and had sent Green back to the pavilion in no time LBW for 28. Fox’s spin proved top be too good for the batsmen and he claimed a further three wickets to have Benwell reeling at 50 – 5. Joe Mills replaced Thompson and he claimed a wicket straight away having dangerman Grice caught behind.

Thompson was asked to come back on and blow the tail away. He didn’t disappoint hitting the stumps three times and bowling Benwell and Walbottle out for 135.

Tynedale 215 – 8 ( G Fox 103no, G Riccalton 33)

Banwell and Walbottle 135 all out (G Fox 4-26, Thompson 4-36)
