Tynedale Cricket Club Lost 1 wicket

Match report Seconds Slump to first defeat

Tynedale 2nd teams 100% start to the season ended at the hands of Leadgate on Saturday. Missing the captain Fox the familiar figure of Matt Ridley stepped into the fold. Unfortunately the day didn’t get off to the best of starts as the coin toss was called incorrectly and Tynedale were inserted on what resembled more of a grassy knoll that a cricket pitch. Indeed the opening pair of Scandle and Riccalton dodged the odd bullet as the ball continually leapt off a length making the opening few overs torrid ones. Riccalton was first to fall lofting the ball to mid on as the ball held up in the Leadgate turf. Rainford came and went and Scandle was now joined by the chirpy Craig Barber. The pair began to repair the innings both seeming to get to grips with the drying wicket, Barber reaching 29 before being caught off the bowling of Dixon. Scandle has proved more difficult to remove than a dried in stain this year and again reached his half century eventually being lbw for 61. New recruit Welton and seasoned campaigner Ridley paired up and took the attack to the bowlers with Welton reaching a maiden 50 with some lusty blows to all parts of the ground. Tynedale reached 207 at 45 overs.
Leadgates reply took an early dent with wickets for both Thompson and Mills. However the early success brought to the wicket Flethcher who began to take his toll on the Tynedale bowlers. Ridley had struck in his very first over but then disappeared to more detinations than an Easyjet flight from Newcastle. Graeme Riccalton then sacrificed his fragile body for the cause and ran in for the first time in 2 seasons. As if he’d never been away he hit that familiar length and line that wowed the crowds back in the mid 90’s and struck in his very first over claiming Dobson lbw. Fletcher however proved to be the thorn in Tynedales side and blasted his way to a quick fire 82 before being caught on the boundry by Mills off the bowling of Pringle. Despite late success from the athletic Thompson the away sides efforts were not sufficient with Leadgate reaching the total with an over to spare. With a little more luck on their side things may well have been different but this game served as a timely reminder that the season will not all be plain sailing for the seconds.
