Tynedale 2nd XV travelled to Swalwell on Saturday for what proposed to be a tougher task than the previous two weeks opponents. On winning the toss captain Fox elected to bat with Riccalton and Scandle opening the proceedings. Progress was however slow as the opening bowlers of Armstrong and Wardman exracted some genuine seem movement and bounce out of the pitch. Riccalton was first to fall skying one to cover for 15. This brought to the crease James Rainford who together with the nuggety Scandle began to get on top of the Swalwell attack. Rainford in particular was ferocious in his treatment of the bowlers smashing the ball to all parts of the ground. Scandle reached a deserved 50 but was out shortly after for a patient 58. Graeme Riccaltons charmed start to the season did not continue as he holed out to Armstrong from the right arm grenades of Briggs. Rainford duly completed his 50 and was now joined by young Ben Archer who showed genuine talent in his stroke play before being caught for 17 with one over to spare. Fox faced a few deliveries but the innings belonged to Rainford with an unbeaten 94 bringing the total to 213.

Swalwells repost couldn’t have got off to a worse start as the fiery Alex Thompson had Nicholls caught behind with his very first delivery. Twizell was finding his rhythm a little harder to come by despite striking up an instant rapport with the on duty umpire. He claimed the wicket of Hope but then made way for Fox. The captain from the start looked menacing and spinning the ball prodigiously bowled Gray around his legs for 33. Thompson plugged away at the other end and had the opposition batsmen hopping around like over zealous line dancers. Rainford, Horncastle and Stobbs all bowled intermittently but it was the re-introduction of the captain that saw the game turn in the away sides favour removing the middle and lower order with all the skill of a surgeons scalpel. Twizell came back and was rewarded for his endeavour with 2 late wickets including a brilliantly deceptive slower ball to dismiss the Swalwell captain. Wrapping up the innings for 178 On this sort of form the young mavericks will take some beating this year.
