Match report Tynedale 1st X1 v Benwell & Walbottle

Tynedale’s victory over Percy Main together with the top three losing in the previous weekend meant that a realistic title challenge was back on and a win against a struggling Benwell team was a must on an unusually clement Hexham afternoon.

Without Scot Kay and Simon Prudhoe missing there was a somewhat makeshift look about a batting line up that had struggled in cup competitions in the days leading up to the game but on winning the toss captain for the day Richard Darling still decided to set a target.
Youngster Joe Barber joined Neil Clark and the pair worked hard on a pitch the favoured bowling all day. With the pair putting on fifty for the opening stand Clark was first to go followed shortly by Barber.
This left Graham and Crichton to continue the effort which they did watchfully. Graham was quick to punish poor balls and Crichton eager to stay at the crease the pair pushed Tyne past 100. Crichton eventually succumbed to the spin of Rashid as did Darling and Barber which left Tynedale in a precarious position with ten overs remaining. This looked to have worsened when Professional Graham was dismissed for 64 but the experience and resilience of Henry Twizell and Paul Scandle helped Tynedale to post exactly 200 in their fifty overs.

Benwell had already chased down nearly 240 in the first meeting of the clubs this season so Tyne were well aware that a big performance was required if they were to win on this occasion especially as in professional Singh, Benwell have one of the best batsmen in the league and with hundreds in the previous two games his form was ominous.

Darling, not 100% fit to bowl decided to use Mark Armstrong as the opening partner for Stu Graham which was to produce almost immediate dividends. Both players had opened in all the week’s cup ties to some success and they were quick to get in a rhythm. On a pitch that helped spin bowling Armstrong produced his best performance of the season with the Benwell batsmen struggling to put bat to ball throughout his spell. Indeed he bowled his fifteen overs straight through and by the time he had finished the game had been put beyond the visitors as he claimed all of the top five Benwell batsmen for only 31 runs.
At the other end Graham bowled beautifully with little reward until he came back for another spell at the tail Enders.
Indian professional Singh looked like giving Benwell a chance of victory as he threatened with a couple of expansive drives and one big six but he was comprehensively bowled by Armstrong for 29.
Graham cleared up the tail finishing with a richly deserved four wickets and Darling claimed one in a decent spell towards the end of the innings as Tynedale ensured maximum points by bowling out Benwell for 123 and winning by 78 runs.
Results elsewhere were kind for the second week running and Tynedale have returned to the summit of the NTSL for the first time in a couple of months, and if they can reproduce team performances like this until the end of the season they must feel they have a great chance of retaining their crown for an unprecedented fourth year running.
