Match report
Tynedale 1st X1 v Percy Main
Title contenders against favourites for relegation is always a potential banana skin and when Tynedale entertained Percy Main in yet another home game they were in no mood to let the winless opposition have even a sniff of a surprise.
The home team batted first on an improving wicket and took no time in making their mark on the game. Tynedale is a small pitch and has a fast outfield so good balls can disappear for four which is what happened with increasing frequency in the first ten overs. With little running between the wickets Scott Kay and Neil Clark had amassed 90 without loss in just over ten overs.
At this point a score well in excess of 300 was looking possible but to credit of a new Percy Main side they managed to stem the runs in the middle part of the innings.
Percy Main has recently amalgamated with the Northumbria University and their team was bolstered by a number of students including Tynedale old boy Michael Philips, who has chosen to play his cricket away from Priors Flat. It seemed strange that he was not to get a bowl in a team that lacked any real pace in its attack.
The first wicket of the day was the catalyst that the visitors needed to stem the tide as they managed to get rid of Neil Clark for another classy 44. As is often the case in cricket one wicket brings two as Gary Pratt managed to get himself out again without managing many runs. Although his undoubted class is not in question he is taking a little longer than expected to show the Tynedale crowd his full abilities.
Prudhoe joined Kay who had moved well past fifty and looked on course for his second successive hundred. However a thigh strain and tiredness meant the later part of his innings was not as fluent as the first fifty and he eventually succumbed five short of what would have been a wonderful hundred.
As Tynedale pushed towards two hundred the forth wicket fell leaving professional Graham at the crease with Jo Barber and the pair set about resurrecting the Tynedale charge with a mixture of exquisite stroke play and hard running. Graham, who does not have a reputation for quick run making showed a more attractive side to his game with some cover drives of the highest quality. He also looked after Barber at the other end who produced his most mature knock to date as he mixed the usual crowd pleasing strokes with a stubborn defence and thoughtful running. As Tynedale passed the magic 300 finishing on 308-4 after fifty overs the took the teams total runs scored in the last two games to exactly 600, surely a club record.
Graham finished unbeaten on 67 and Barber on 54.
In reply it was unlikely that Percy Main were ever going to even attempt to chase down three hundred and that looked even less likely after 10 overs when they were reduced to 30-3 as Twizell took two and Graham added a third.
Gary Pratt may not have excelled with the bat but his fielding display was as good as you will see in local cricket which included a fine direct hitting run out to take Percy Mains fourth wicket leaving them 54-4.
Twizell finished his spell with another wicket before being replaced by Armstrong and at the other end Darling took over from Graham.
Darling has not bowled for a couple of weeks due to injury and as a result his first couple of overs were slightly rusty but things soon got back to normal as he claimed a wicket, followed by Armstrong first in the next over.
At one end Percy Mains professional Ali was still at the crease and as he passed 50 his tail wagged with him as they limped past 100.
Armstrong opted to toss the ball up to the tail enders and although they had limited six hitting success they all eventually succumbed to his guile as he finished with 4-48 and Percy Main were bowled out for 145 in the 40th over.
It was another crushing defeat handed out by a Tynedale team who went to the top of the league for the first time this season and who look to be moving towards top form.
