Match report
Tynedale 1st X1 v Leadgate
After last weeks demolition job on Ashington Tynedale looked to continue their improvement against unbeaten Leadgate at Priors Flat. As the week before the game was effected by the weather but this time it was an unusually strong wind that had to be contended with.
Tynedale lost the toss and were inserted on a pitch that had little time for preparation due to a wet midweek but seemed dry enough on the surface. However it was to become quickly apparent that it was extremely slow and there was a lack of bounce at either end.
With that in mind the Tynedale start was extremely pleasing as Clark and Kay put on 60 in the first ten overs. This is not the first time the pair have given their team a flyer and as is often the case the middle order find it easier to progress an innings in these situations. On this occasion it was Neil Clark who was first to fall but not before he had achieved a momentous milestone in the club’s history by accumulating 8,146 league runs for the club putting him into third on the all time run scorers list one be removing Edwin Bell one place down the order. On this occasion however he was comprehensively bowled by Murray for 28.
This bought Gary Pratt to the crease, who was suffering from illness and never looked settled at the crease and was caught for eight. At the other end Scot Kay was looking back to form and although it was perhaps a wicket where no batsmen could feel totally comfortable he was quick to pounce on any loose bowling from particularly the Leadgate professional Broom.
When the other left hander Prudhoe joined him they both dominated the bowling and set about winning the game in the first half. The pair took the total from 88-2 past 200 with thirteen overs still to bat.
During this pair Scott Kay had reached his first hundred of the season and although he described it as ‘the worst ton of his career’ his 121 was enough to suggest that the game would be beyond Leadgate by tea.
Simon Prudhoe is also a class bat who has started his Tynedale career slowly but his 68 is hopefully a sign of things to come for the future.
Despite a quick twenty from Graham the middle order did not capitalise as the might wanted to have but still after fifty overs Tynedale posted a formidable 292-7.
The recent high profile additions to the batting order has meant that the professional Stuart Graham is relied on slightly more for his bowling at the moment and with the injury prone Richard Darling unable to bowl for at least a couple of weeks the workload of the other opening bowler has increased again. This is the type of responsibility Graham thrives upon therefore it was no surprise when he produced a devastating spell against his former employers.
At one end Henry Twizell bowled maiden after maiden whilst at the other Graham looked like getting a wicket every over. In Graham’s third over he took two wickets in two balls including a first ball duck for New Zealand ‘A’ batsman Broom which made the target of 292 even more formidable. After this the away team did not even attempt the victory and were reduced to 26-4 after thirteen overs when Twizell added to the three victims claimed by Graham.
Henry Twizell was replaced by debutant and son Hew Twizell after an impressive 13 overs that included 8 maidens. At the other end Mark Armstrong replaced the pro who had taken 3-16 in 11 overs.
Teenager Hew although obviously nervous did not have to wait too long before claming his first league wicket, only 252 behind his father. At the other end Armstrong who has shaken off a back injury looked rusty and failed to trouble the Leadgate batters early on in his spell. As the visitors limped past 100 and the rain threatened Scot Kay introduced himself to immediate effect which also resulted in a change of luck for Armstrong who picked up a couple of lbw’s to add to a quick three wickets for the captain and wrapped up an extremely impressive team performance from the Champions bowling out Leadgate for 138.
