Tynedale Cricket Club 1st Team v Swalwell on Sat 05 May 2007 at
Tynedale Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
The bookies favourites for the NTSL met at priors flat in an early season crunch game. Too early most would agree for it to be a league decider but it may be an indication of what is to come.
However, the home team will hope not as they were well beaten on the day by a Swalwell outfit that bowled, fielded and batted better on the day. This is not to say that Tynedale did not play well as conditions, the pitch and a bad start made for most of the difference between the two teams.
Scot Kay won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that although may have had a green tinge looked good to bat on. However this did not seem to be the case as there as plenty of early lateral movement for the Swalwell seamers who also enjoyed the low cloud cover which burnt off into the afternoon.
Both Clark and Kay were dismissed within the first two over’s and in a re jigged line up that included Gary Pratt back into the team; he and fellow left hander Simon Prudhoe started to rebuild the innings. They both played themselves in with ex Durham player Pratt looking especially good at times things looked back on track as the score passed fifty.
However the middle part of the innings was disastrous for the home team as there was a real collapse and the heart of a strong batting team failed in spectacular style as Tynedale moved from 58-2 to 88-6 within seven over’s as both left hander’s, Graham and Darling all disappeared quickly.
This bought the lower order in to play with the last recognised batsmen Crichton who has had an extremely promising start to the season both with bat and behind the stumps. And this was to be the day he made his maiden first team fifty as he played with a confidence and ease that has been lacking in his game for the last couple of seasons. Quick running between the wickets means he accumulates runs quickly and some fine driving and pulling gave Tynedale half a chance at the interval as they were eventually bowled out for 160.
In the second half the clouds lifted and the track had lost its early juice for the seamers but the opening bowling pair of Graham and Darling ran in just as hard all the same. Although wickets and chances were not in abundance both bowled excellent line and length with unerring consistency. There were a couple of close lbw appeals that were turned down but these decisions happen with great frequency in local league cricket and on this occasion they went the way of the visitors. The deadlock was broken however in the thirteenth over by darling which produced a flurry of wickets that enthused the home crowd and their team and after 17 over’s Swalwell were 61-3. At this point Armstrong and Twizell replaced the openers and again both bowlers bowled well but without ever threatening a wicket. To swalwell’s credit they approached the small target in a text book manner, playing solidly in defence and collecting one or two singles an over without taking undue risks.
Mark Armstrong in particular has made a strong bowling start to the season and seems to have eradicated the one bad ball of the over but on a wicket that took no turn he could do little else than bowl in the right areas and hope for a mistake.
As batsmen Pattison and Rutherford increased the score towards a hundred they began to play slightly more expansive cricket which did bring one or two half chances as a catch just eluded Kay and the rarest of rare dropped catches by ‘England Fielder’ Gary Pratt off Armstrong meant that the slim hope of a comeback evaporated into the evening sunshine.
Late wickets did arrive courtesy of Darling, Kay and Pringle but it was too little to late and Swalwell passed their target with six over’s remaining and four wickets in hand.
