Tynedale Cricket Club 1st Team v Newcastle City on Sat 28 Apr 2007 at
Tynedale Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Tynedale 1st x1 v Newcastle City
Tynedale’s first home game of the season saw them entertain last years third place team, Newcastle City. However the close season has seen the Newcastle based team lose a number of important players and based on their performance on Saturday they could find themselves closer to the bottom of the table this year as Tynedale secured a comfortable 20 point victory. However, the champions were by no means at their best on their first home outing of the campaign.
Batting first Newcastle could not get to grips with the new ball pairing of Richard Darling and Stuart Graham who both claimed early wickets and after only four overs the visitors were in all sorts of trouble at 7 for 3. Graham claimed two and darling the other. From there City managed a fight back of sorts as the fourth wicket partnership took the total towards 50. Henry Twizell replaced Graham who having started well bowled a touch too full and was hit for a number of boundaries. It was indeed Twizell who was to strike in his third over as his nagging lack of pace and persistent line claimed the wicket of opener Husain for 15 leaving the guests on 46-4.
Captain Kay changed the bowling again as Darling began to tire and he bought back Graham from the other end in a bid to blast through the City middle order. The change bought about a flurry of more wickets as Twizell and graham both claimed another in quick succession leaving city 79-6. Big Henry was also replaced as Darling came back at the other end and reduced the batting team to 86-8 with two wickets of his own and when Graham claimed his forth with the score still under 100 the game was all but over in the first half. However, Tynedale rarely make light work of teams and the final pair set about some poor bowling bowling from both quickies as number 11 Khan smashed 42 in no time at all to take the visitors to 150 before Daring Finally bowled Khan and dismissing Newcastle city for 150.
Chasing 150 on a good batting track with a small outfield should in theory be a comfortable task but nerves can get fraid if early wickets are lost so with that in mind Tynedale’s openers Clark and Kay set about the bowling attack with usual vigour. However the wheels showed signs of coming off as at one end Kay, Graham and Barber all fell cheaply. But at the other end was the ever efficient Neil Clark who looked better for an innings last week and increased in prowess the longer he batted. Indeed it was he who took the game by the scruff of the neck and took away any lingering ambitions of an unlikely away win as together with Richard Darling took the score to just under a hundred until Darling was caught for a useful 23. wicketkeeper Jamie Crichton continued his impressive start to the season as he and Clark chased down the total with over twenty overs to spare. Crichton finished 18 not out but it was opening bat Neil Clark who surely claimed the mom award for his unbeaten 84 off only 53 deliveries.
So with two wins out of two and 39 out of a possible 40 points Tyne’s season has made a decent start but few would disagree that they will have to move up the gears quickly as the next game see’s title contender’s Swalwell visit Hexham on Saturday and although it is far too early to call it a title fight it may give early indications as to wear the trophy may end up come the end of September.
Newcastle City 150 all out – (Graham 4-71) (Darling 4-56) (Twizell 2-19)
